8 Tips for Hiking with Dogs

  1. Look For Dog Friendly Hiking Trails – Plan ahead and find a pet friendly hiking trail. Some parks do not allow pets on all trails so make to check out the sign at the trailhead. Pick a short easy trail to start with to test out how your dog reacts to trail hiking.
  2. Get a 6ft Leash – Many parks require all dogs to be on a leash no more than 6ft long to prevent damage to the trail and wildlife. Switching from a collar to harness will also help relieve stress on your dog’s neck.
  3. Dog Tag or GPS – Make sure to have some form of identification and contact info on your dog just in case you get separated. On more secluded trails, you might consider investing a gps tracking system like Tagg Dog.
  4. Bring Lots of Poop Bags! – Do not forget to bring lots of doggie poop bags. Consider bringing a gallon sized plastic freezer bag to store the bags in so you can enjoy the rest of your hike odor free!
  5. Pack Water for You and Your Dog – Make a makeshift dog bowl by cutting of the top of a water bottle or invest in a collapsible water bowl.
  6. Treats and Snacks – Bring some treats with you to reward your dog for good behavior or to bribe them into taking a picture on your hike. If you are going on a long hike, don’t forget to pack some snacks for your dog too. Check into getting a energy bar for dogs like TurboPUP so you don’t have to carry heavy dog food with you.
  7. Hiking Booties – If your dog will consider wearing hiking booties (I’m pretty sure my dog would rather gnaw her way out of them then even try to wear them) they will great reduce their risk of injuries from slipping or cutting their paws on rocks. I would highly recommend trying them out first at home to make sure your dog in comfortable and more importantly safe wearing them.
  8. Flea and Tick Medicine – Don’t forget to treat your dog for fleas, ticks, and other unwanted bug bites before you start your hike. Your dog and your house will thank you!
